Curzon Ashton suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss to Darlington in the National League North at The Tameside Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Goals for Adam Campbell, Sean Reid and Jarett Rivers secured the three points for the visitors as they managed to take their first victory this league campaign.

The Nash started the game brightly and could have easily found themselves in the lead. A right-in swinging cross from Matty Waters nearly managed to catch out ‘keeper, Johnny Saltmer as he pushed over the bar.

Steve Cunningham’s men continued to push for an opening goal and nearly managed to do so again with ten minutes on the clock. Alex Curran and Dominic Knowles did exceptionally well to link up in the middle of the park, only for Curran’s effort to drag just wide of the post.

The Quakers soon responded and did so with their first goal through Campbell. After finding a way through Curzon’s backline, Campbell beat the offside trap and slipped the ball underneath Cameron Mason to make it 1-0 to the visitors on the 14th minute.

Dale Whitham could have also found himself on the scoresheet after linking up with Knowles on the edge of the area. His chipped effort, however, was cleared away by Saltmer in the Darlington goal.

As the second half started, things could have gone from bad to worse for Curzon with the visitors once again going close. Waters’ last-ditch clearance off the line managed to keep the scoreline down to just the one goal as Rivers looked to double the lead.

67 minutes had gone and Darlington looked to extend their lead. Reid was there at the back post following some good work from Campbell on the right-hand side. The ball was whipped in as Reid headed downwards into the back of the net.

Rivers finally got his goal for Darlington after a slight mix up within the Curzon area. Rivers pounced on the mistake and made it 3-0 with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Curzon will now look to redeem themselves next weekend as they face Blyth Spartans back at the Tameside.
