A to Z: Relegation Zone A to Z: Relegation Zone

The final day of our A to Z series is upon us, and after 25 entries, we are dedicating Z to the art of survival, Z is for the relegation zone! Somewhere we have flirted with on occasions, but always avoided when it mattered the most.

For five seasons now the club have established themselves as a mainstay in the National League North, avoiding drifting into the abyss of relegation, even when the going got tough.

The club have always secured their survival prior to the last game of the season, avoiding putting our loyal supporters through the heart palpitations of final day drama.

During our first season in the sixth tier, we defied all expectations in what many anticipated to be a backs to the wall campaign, by finishing a club record 11th under the management of John Flanagan.

The 2016-17 season saw the club again secure a mid-table spot, finishing 14th, 17 points clear of the drop zone.

The following year saw the club come as close to the bottom three as we have done to date in 2017-18, as we narrowly avoided being dragged into obscurity, finishing three points above Gainsborough Trinity, who sat 20th.

During 2018-19, we again secured our safety long before the last fixture, and as with every season, enjoyed some unforgettable victories over former Football League sides such as York, Chester and Darlington. We ended the season 14 points above 20th placed Ashton United, as our local rivals suffered relegation to step three.

This season, due to the PPG structure in place following the campaign's curtailment, we finished 20th, still nine points clear of 21st and raring to go and give it our best this coming year!

We can't wait to welcome our brilliant supporters back to the Tameside Stadium once it is safe to do so, for what will hopefully be our best season to date at this level!
