After seven superb years in charge, Curzon Ashton have parted company with manager, John Flanagan and assistant manager, Ian Nevison. ‘Flan and Nev’ enjoyed many a success in their time at the club, including two promotions, one league title and a fairy tale FA Cup run, as well as carrying the club to its highest ever point in its history, guiding them to the National League North.
The pair arrived at the Tameside Stadium in 2011, and in their first year at the helm guided Curzon to their highest ever league position, finishing second in the NPL Division One North, before narrowly losing out on promotion after defeat to Witton Albion in the play-off final.
They continued to push for success in their second season in charge and again came agonisingly close to silverware for the second time in two seasons, after the Nash were cruelly beaten on penalties by North Ferriby in the Northern Premier League Challenge Cup Final.
The 2013/14 season turned out to be third time lucky for Flanagan and Nevison, as the Nash legends guided the club to their first league title in 36 years, with a dramatic late win at Harrogate Railway sealing the title. Curzon went on to record an impressive 99 points that season, losing just five times to secure their promotion to the NPL Premier in style.
After taking the club to their highest league division in history, fan favourites, Flanagan and Nevison had no plans to wait around in the NPL Premier and again worked their heroics to secure back to back promotions. Curzon booked their place in the National League North for the first with a historic penalty shoot out win over local rivals Ashton United in the play-off semi-final, and a memorable 1-0 win over Ilkeston in the final, arguably one of the club’s greatest day’s at the Tameside Stadium.
The dizzy heights of the National League North did not faint the iconic duo one bit as against all the odds they guided the side to an outstanding 11th place finish, crowning Curzon as the top team in Tameside for the first time.
The pair continued to prove the doubters wrong in the 2016/17 term as there was no case of second season syndrome for the side as they again secured their status for in the National League North, and ensured they’d be in the division for a third successive year.
The highlight of the season however was the club’s FA Cup run as Flanagan and Nevison took the Nash to the Second Round Proper, equalling the club’s best ever finish in the competition. The famous run included historic wins over former football league side York City, and a First Round win over Westfields, before a heart breaking 4-3 defeat to Wimbledon in the Second Round.
In spite of the heavy competition in the National League North last season Flan and Nev continued to work their magic and pulled the Nash out of a relegation battle to secure the club’s place in Step two for another season.
There is no doubt that John and Ian will forever be remembered as legends at Curzon Ashton FC, and everyone at the club wishes them every success in the future. Thank you, Flan and Nev!
