Craig Mahon began his first full campaign as Curzon Ashton player-manager with a convincing 3-0 win over National League North new-boys, Needham Market. Speaking after the match, Mahon stated “First half was a little bit tentative. Second half I thought we were a bit calmer, more controlled and as soon as we got that first goal, there was no stopping us.”
The manager sang praises for the front three of Isaac Buckley-Ricketts, captain Jimmy Spencer and Stefan Mols, the latter duo scoring all three, as well as substitute Mike Afuye, who assisted the final goal. With Spencer and Mols getting off the mark, continuing their fruitful partnership from last season, Mols commented on how he wants to improve on his 13-goal tally from last season.
“For me, going into pre-season was just about trying to push on from last season. I got a couple goals and assists and I’m looking to improve on that tally. Obviously to get off the mark with one is nice and for Jim (Spencer) to get two on the opening day is a big confidence booster.”
Curzons fortunes took them to the top of the table, while South Shields opening day was the exact opposite. The Mariners suffered a 3-0 loss away at Hereford, a result which sees them prop up the rest of the league in 24th. Manager Elliott Dickman will be looking to move the needle back home at the 1st Cloud Arena and avoid staying in the relegation zone longer than they would like.
The last time these sides met was at the Tameside, where the Nash made April Fools of Saturday’s hosts, thanks to a brace from Isaac Sinclair. It was a crucial result which helped Curzon secure pole-position for a play-off spot over the Mariners. The reverse fixture in the first half of last season also saw Curzon snatch a point from the Durham-based club.
Despite all the positive signs, South Shields is a team that can not be underestimated, especially with them holding on to Paul Blackett. The forward was not only the club’s top scorer, but his 30 goals last season saw him take the division’s Golden Boot award. The Nash backline may have kept him quiet last season but can they repeat the feat again?
Best wishes to all the traveling fans for the first away game this season!
