‘I went to Cape Verde earlier in September to see my family. I went to the island of Sao Vicente where my parents lived and where my grandparents (both grandmothers) and whole family currently live. Cape Verde had floods for the first time ever back in August, and had a night of it when I was there, Sao Vicente was one of the main islands affected by it. Whilst I was there I made sure to give some clothes away to the locals that were affected most and Curzon were generous in giving me t-shirts to give away (if only I had more).’
The lad in the green was training by himself in the local pitch (Campo de Bitin), he trains most days of the week for the local team at 6am.
The 2 lads play for local teams in Sao Vicente. One is a left back and one is a winger.
I told the little kid I was giving t-shirts away, he asked me ‘is it for free or do I have to pay’ I said it’s free and he said ‘let me go ask my aunty’. He was a 9 year old Porto FC fan. His aunt asked me if I have more shirts so she could give to her nieces and nephews.
The 4 ladies saw me with these t-shirts and asked if I had any for their children. They were happy bubbly and thankful & wore the t shirts for a picture.
This dad walked over to me and asked for a shirt for his son.
‘I wish I had more things to give away, the people of Sao Vicente including some family and friends had their houses destroyed due to the floods, this has left them without washing machines, beds, and other household essentials. Some areas are still affected by this but the locals and people from other islands like tourist islands such as Sal got a 4 hour ferry over to help the locals of Sao Vicente. It is a small island & people may not have much but everyone gets together and helps each other out – it’s what the people are about.
For what seems like a little to us, goes a long way to our people. Massive shoutout to Curzon for their generosity.’
